King and pawn endgames look simple, but they punish small mistakes. One tempo can decide whether a pawn promotes or the game is drawn.

The most important idea is king activity. In the endgame, the king becomes a fighting piece that attacks pawns, supports promotion, and blocks the enemy king.

King Activity

In the opening, the king needs safety. In the endgame, the king needs activity. A king in the center can attack pawns and support its own passed pawn.

If you leave your king passive while the opponent centralizes, you may lose even equal pawn endings.

Opposition

Opposition means the kings face each other with one square between them, and the side to move must give way. This lets the other king enter important squares.

The concept matters most when one king tries to escort a pawn to promotion and the other king tries to block it.

The Square of the Pawn

The square of the pawn is a visual shortcut. Imagine a square from the pawn to the promotion rank. If the defending king can step into that square, it can usually catch the pawn. If not, the pawn promotes.

This rule is especially helpful when deciding whether to push your passer or first use your king to win another pawn.

Outside Passed Pawns

An outside passed pawn is far from the main pawn group. Its strength is that it distracts the enemy king. While the king chases the outside passer, your king can win pawns on the other side.

This is why queenside majority versus kingside majority endings often revolve around creating a distant passer at the right time.

Basic Promotion Plan

To promote a pawn, your king often needs to stand in front of it or beside it. Pushing too early may allow the defending king to take opposition and draw.

The simple rule: improve your king first unless the pawn race is clearly winning.

Practice plan

  • Set up king and pawn versus king and practice winning with the pawn on different files.
  • Practice opposition until you can explain who must move away.
  • Use the square of the pawn in real games before calculating every king move.
